Martyn spent 40 years of his professional life in a soundproofed booth behind a mic, telling other people’s stories in French and English, BEFORE he started recording audiobooks.
He used to be a simultaneous interpreter, beginning his career at the frontline of international diplomacy at NATO HQ in Brussels, then, after a 4-year interlude to travel the world by motorbike, (you can see that here) he moved to South Africa, where he was engaged to interpret for Nelson Mandela, shortly after his (Mandela’s) release from jail.
Three decades later, he swapped live conversations, for recording stories people have written down, including the monumental Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas (260 hours of finished audio) but also contemporary fiction and non-fiction. He has also acted on stage and screen and speaks French like a native speaker, as well as German and Spanish.
